Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary's Church in New Haven Connecticut, petitioned the stat legislature in 1882 to officially start the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. Its founding principles then and now are charity, unity and fraternity.
The Knights of Columbus was originally formed to provide financial assistance to members and their families. They also provided aid to the sick, disabled, and needy members and their families. Fellowship is promited among members through many activities and opportunities for service.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from one council in 1882 to more than 14000 councils and 1.8 million members worldwide!
